Kathryn Ian is a new media artist and musician. She holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Studio Practice from California College of the Arts (2016), an MA in the Theory and History of Contemporary Art from Jacobs University, Bremen, Germany (2006), and a BFA in photography from SUNY at Buffalo (2002). Kathryn's work approaches phenomenological inquiry performatively: she explores the relationship between embodiment and environment through intentional actions, documentation practices, and immersive multimedia installations.

Kathryn co-founded the experimental musical project Lux Interna with Joshua Levi Ian, and has released six studio albums to date. Lux Interna has been represented by labels in Germany (Eis und Licht), New York (Projekt Records), and California (Pesanta Urfolk). Currently Lux Interna is composing The New Wilderness Gospel, an experimental narrative project which draws together text, sound, video, and performance to explore the interdependence of environmental and existential wilderness.  She has exhibited and performed in California at the Knitting Factory in LA, the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, and the SF MoMA, at at various venues in New York, Ohio, Germany, Hungary, Switzerland, and Russia.
